My 5 Favorite Things About Fall - and a Complaint!

The topic of the Lifestyle Sista's linkup this Friday was 5 Favorite Things About Fall. Since I read some of the posts, I have been thinking about how I feel about this time of year.If I had to pick a favorite season, it would be summer.  Spring and autumn tie for second. Strange as it may seem, for a person who was born in Canada and loves living in Montana, winter is my least favorite season.

First of all, let me voice a complaint about fall:

It often snows during the first week of October!
I took this photo this week (October 2nd).
We had a little snowstorm on Thursday (October 2), and temperatures dipped down to 22 degrees F. (-5.6 C). It was a chilly night, but then we didn't need our coats at the soccer game the next day.

Here are 5 things, however, that I do really do like about fall:

1.  If we have snow, it melts quickly because the ground is still warm.

The snow melted, but it remained cold for a while.
Even this deer looked grumpy about it!

2.  Fall is the season of my birthday (October) and my wedding anniversary (September).

Perfect fall weather made our wedding reception even more special.

3. The past few years we have received a fall gift of apples from our neighbor's tree!

Aren't these apples beautiful!

4. High School soccer season is in the fall in Montana - typically better weather than in spring.

Fortunately, in this photo from yesterday the white marks on the field are chalk lines - not snow!

5. The colors of autumn are unbelievably stunning in the Eastern part of North America - but also can be very pretty in the West.

This photo was taken several years ago in September at Glacier National Park, MT.
What do you like about Fall?

  1. I can't believe it snowed already! Winter is my least favorite season too. We only get a little snow - and a LOT of rain. That's the only bad thing about fall - it's followed by Winter :). Love the picture from your wedding!

  2. Winter is wonderful - as long as I don't have to drive, Spring is amazing as the world reawakens, lazy, hot summer days are always much loved, but nothing beats a warm, colorful Fall day without bugs! :)

    1. Driving in winter is one of the reasons I like it least. Sounds like you are happy year round!

  3. Happy anniversary month! We were also married in October--it is my favorite month! It also usually snows early here along the front range of Colorado, but not as yet. Maybe next week? The higher mountains, above 10,000 feet, have had lots of snow already. I am finding the winters here much milder than the ones we experienced in NYC. There is was grey and damp almost all winter. The autumn colors were so beautiful here this year--we had a lot of summer rain that made the difference.

    1. Glad you are enjoying life in the West! Our fall colors have been really beautiful this year too - and have persisted despite the short snow squall and hard freeze we just had :)
Today is absolutely beautiful - and not coats needed!

  4. Autumn is my most favourite season - perhaps because of relief that the summer meltdown is over. I love the crisp nights when snuggling into bed becomes a pleasure again. The vivid autumnal colours make my heart sing. I am partial to winter and spring too. And we won't mention the other one.
    Happy anniversary month.

  5. Five things???? Well, like you my birthday is in October, the colours, the smell of the crisp leaves on the ground and walking through them, leaving the window open at night and how good it feels to stay under the covers when the room is so cool, and the seasonal foods.....apple butter, pumpkin pie, baked squash.... I'm sure there's more but that's five lol.

    1. Do you play Soccer (Football!) My son was just saying yesterday how ridiculous it is that the sport actually uses players feet to kick the ball is not called football in the USA!

  8. Great pictures Susan, especially the one with deer (something we don't see often 'round here!)

PS Is that your son playing soccer? He's a champ! :)

    1. Thanks Mike - people consider deer to be pests, there are so many in Montana! They make gardening a challenge, but I still enjoy having them around.
That is my son - and yes, he is! I am going to tell him about your site ... looks like he could pick up a lot of great nutrition and exercise tips there.

I'd be complaining about snow in the fall to!!! Thankfully, our first snowfall here (southern Ontario, Canada) is usually reserved for the end of October, early November (though, there's always exceptions)

  11. How funny that you mentioned snow the first week of October. We used to live in western NY and we often got snow the first week of October. It always caught me off guard. :)

    1. It was unexpected in the forecast - but now that this week has been so nice, I will no doubt be caught off guard again when the temperatures plummet!
