Words for Wednesday - and a Prize-Winning Recipe!

Words for Wednesday.  What is this challenge all about?

I will explain a bit - and then I'll share a recipe link and the word prompt for this week!

Delores of Under the Porch Light used to offer a weekly writing prompt called Words for Wednesday, and encouraged others to use it to write something creative.  Unfortunately, Delores began to have computer issues, and could no longer provide the weekly prompts. Elephant’s Child took over for a while, and then she organized volunteers to share the responsibility. Drifting through Life hosted in July, Randomosity in August.

Now, it is my turn to be the host for the month of September!  I have been surprised that the writing process of publishing a story from my own prompt has turned out to be not much
different of an experience than writing from words chosen by someone else. That is perhaps because I've been very careful to not think about what I would be writing when I chose the words.

I certainly didn't realize when I selected last week's prompt that it would lead me to write about an award winning cookie recipe, search on line for a link to a suitable recipe, and then bake a batch of the cookies that my family certainly felt were worthy of an award! But it did!

The cookies have a secret ingredient ... crushed ice cream cones!

The secret ingredient in the prize winning cookie recipe: crushed ice cream cones!

I have realized that when I publish this Words for Wednesday challenge on Wednesday in Montana, it is no longer Wednesday for the people who participate from the other side of the globe. (That's why I offered them a sneak peak at this week's words yesterday!)

Next week, I plan to publish the Words for Wednesday challenge on Tuesday. Another chapter of “The Mindy Story” will be published then, as well.

How to Participate in Words for Wednesday:

The writing prompt is usually in the form of six (or twelve) words, or a phrase, but may also be a photo, an idea, or anything that might inspire a piece of flash fiction.
There are no deadlines or rules or prizes. Everyone is invited to participate, as often or as little as you choose. Feel free to write a single sentence or an entire story from the prompt.
Publish your work in the comments below, or on your own blog with a link back to this blog post. If you publish your work on your own blog be sure to also leave a comment here. That way everyone can find, read, and comment on your post.
Note: As with any comments on this blog, anything considered inappropriate, derogatory, or offensive will not be published.

Here are the words for this week:

gutters, garlic, lint, mix, flowers, reduce

AND / OR

lemonade, deck, musical, automatic, flag, search

Give this fun challenge a try. I can't wait to see what you write!

Last week I asked if you could figure out how I select the words for a word prompt. So far, no one has guessed entirely correctly - but I will provide the answer next Tuesday.

Do you have a favorite oatmeal cookie recipe?

This post may be linked to one of the great link-up parties I follow and list on my blog. Check them out!

  1. I just love the stories. I look forward to them. I think Mindy might get in trouble with the cookie selling idea. It's not exactly honest! And...I love all oatmeal cookies. I have loved every recipe I have ever used. These sound like they would be extra good, though.

    1. Hi Haralee.
I have not reprinted the recipe here because it is not mine to share - unlike Mindy, I wouldn't feel right pretending that it is mine! There is a clickable link under the "Secret ingredient" photo. Just click on the title of the recipe "Chocolate Coffee Toffee Oatmeal Cookies" - or go to this url: http://www.bluebonnet.com/recipes-Chocolate-Coffee-Toffee-Oatmeal-Cookies-646.html
I hope you will let me know what you think of the recipe - and the secret ingredient!

  3. I wanted to deck him. That smug assertion that any musical made about my life would be subtitled 'Calamity Jane at Home' was automatic red flag material.
Mama would be proud of me. Instead of hitting him I 'made lemonade from the lemons he had given me' and invited him round to a pleasant dinner for two at home. Just because I don't cook or clean doesn't mean I can't. Does it?.
I sat down and thought about it. Drew up a (long) list. Some of it was easy. Clean the overflowing gutters, so that we could sit outside. Dust. Remove the lint from my only dress. Flowers for the table.
The cooking was more complicated. A search of my mother's recipe books turned up something which looked possible. Fillet steak, with a garlic and peppercorn sauce. No dessert. He doesn't need any more condition.
With the ingredients laid out on the kitchen bench I got started. Saute the steak until bleu. Add peppercorns and garlic to the mix, deglaze with white wine and stir over a high heat to reduce.
What the... Bleu steak? Sounds off to me. He can have it cooked to a crisp. An hour should do it. Minced garlic? Blood will add extra flavour. Deglaze? What in hell does that mean? How much white wine, reduce how far...
I GIVE UP. Calamity and I have more important things to do.

    1. I love this EC ... and I love that you and I both produced a recipe from Words for Wednesday! (I think I might even be able to follow yours, even if your main character could not!)

    2. I'm drooling here at the thought of the garlic and peppercorn sauce...I love pepper sauce, with a medium-rare steak, though, thanks...not charred to a crisp or bleu!!! :)

Good story, EC...I read it with a smile on my face (where else would I have a smile, I wonder?). :)

  5. I love EC's story, even though I'm horrified at the thought of steak cooked for an hour. Love garlic sauce too, but hold the peppercorns.

The cookies sound nice, but I won't be making them.

  7. Okay I read Haralee's comment and am going after the recipe myself although I think I remembered to pin it yesterday. I'm still going back because well...ice cream cones!

I'm going to do my flash fiction here this week...
I walked around the house today wondering when we would get to experience more of the wonderful Fall weather we had last week. As I came around the side I started marking off things for hubby's "to do" list this weekend. He needs to clean out the dryer vent it looks a little clogged and the gutters definitely need cleaned out after that last storm. While he's doing that I'm going to mix up the last of the garden vegetables and mix it with some chicken for some stir fry. I'm trying to eat healthier so I can reduce my waste a little!

    1. I am so sorry to be so long commenting on your flash fiction here Rena! I love your use of the words! Did your gutters really need to be cleaned out? Some of ours are too high for us to get to, so I have a call out for a consult to get them done today!

    1. Thanks for leaving the link Karen! You were so creative with how you used the words!! I know it is confusing to keep up with where and when the prompt is posted, now that we have multiple hosts, and our time zones are all different - but I really appreciate you participating with my words!
